Former Palma quarterback Thomas Nunes has played in all seven games this season for the University of San Diego football team on the defensive side of the ball.

Listed as a defensive back, the 6-foot-2 Nunes has recorded four solo and four assisted tackles for the Toreros, collecting at least one tackle in six of the team’s seven games.

Nunes threw for nearly 1,800 yards and 17 touchdowns, and rushed for 800 yards and 12 scores in guiding Palma to the county’s first-ever state divisional football title in 2023.

The sophomore, who finished among the Chieftains team leaders in interceptions as a senior, also played basketball and lacrosse at Palma.

A pair of former Carmel standouts are teammates of Nunes’ in sophomore offensive lineman Oscar Weigel and Herald All-County Offensive Player of the Year Ashton Rees, who is a backup defensive back.

Monterey County has become a pipeline of late for the Toreros, as Palma products Emilo Martinez and Grant Sergent played there, along with current Carmel assistant coach Rashaan Ward.
