ROCHESTER, Mich. — Oakland and Robert Morris University played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday at Oakland Soccer Field in a rainy matchup, as Golden Grizzlies captain Gabriel Baylon scored his first goal of the season.
The first half opened with both teams testing each other’s defenses. Oakland’s Cole Thompson stood firm, making a pair of first half saves, including a notable stop against Royie Rahamim in the seventh minute.
Oakland found their breakthrough in the 28th minute when Gabriel Baylon scored his first goal of the season, and his first since 2022, assisted by Andriy Bilous, who notched his team-best third assist of the season, to take the lead.
Despite several attempts by the Colonials, including a shot by Kyler Miller that missed the target, Oakland maintained control, helping Oakland conclude the first half with a 1-0 lead, buoyed by a solid defensive effort and efficient offense.
The second half began with Oakland pushing forward aggressively, as Baylon and Bilous each fired shots within the opening minutes. The Golden Grizzlies maintained pressure, with Tim Allos and Jack Klomparens both attempting to capitalize on their opportunities as well. Despite outshooting RMU in the early stages, they were unable to find the back of the net.
RMU responded with a series of attacks, culminating in a goal by Victor Koah in the 60th minute, assisted by Jaxson Lee, leveling the match at 1-1. Just 13 minutes after the score, the game would be paused due to a lightning delay.
The game resumed roughly an hour later, resuming what was an intense final 17 minutes. Oakland created chances to go-ahead, as Abdul Al-Rashed and Julian Kanzler both tested the RMU defense, as Kanzler’s shot nearly struck gold, but missed just left. The half closed with Oakland unable to break the deadlock, ending with a 1-1 draw.
Baylon scored the team’s only goal, converting one of his two shots. Bilous provided an assist and managed three shots of his own, with one on target. Klomparens and Christopher Jean-Léger each added a pair of shots, with Klomparens putting one on goal.
Oakland was the aggressor for most of the match, outshooting RMU 17 to 12, with a 5 to 4 advantage in shots on goal as well.
The Golden Grizzlies will travel to Highland Heights, KY, to take on Northern Kentucky University on October 25 at 3 p.m.
