Bicycle Rider Killed in Car Crash on Highway 178 in Bakersfield Bicycle Rider Killed in Car Crash on Highway 178 in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Jan. 5, 2025) — A woman riding a bicycle died Sunday night after a collision involving a bicycle and a passenger vehicle on the Union Avenue off-ramp from westbound Highway 178, authorities said.

The crash was reported on Jan. 4th around 9 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. Police and paramedics responded to Highway 178 and Union Avenue.

According to CHP, a 44-year-old woman was riding a bicycle westbound on the Union Avenue off-ramp when she was struck by a vehicle exiting the freeway. Investigators said a 23-year-old man driving a 2007 Honda was traveling westbound on Highway 178 and had taken the Union Avenue exit at the time of the collision.

CHP officials stated that the bicyclist’s position on the ramp and limited lighting conditions contributed to the driver being unable to avoid the crash. The woman was ejected from the bicycle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver remained at the location and cooperated fully with investigators. Authorities said it was not immediately known whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
