Oakland Police officers were placed on paid administrative leave after an in-custody death Saturday, the police department said.

Police said officers responded to the 11000 block of Ettrick Street just after 4:15 a.m. on Saturday for a home break-in. Simultaneously, officers were notified of a person experiencing a medical emergency, and it was believed that it was the same person related to the break-in, according to authorities.

Upon arrival, police report finding the person inside the home. When trying to detain them, a brief struggled ensued, and after being taken into custody, the person became unresponsive, according to officials.

The person was transported to the hospital for further treatment, but ultimately died at the hospital, authorities report.

Officials said the officers involved in the incident were placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with the police department’s policy.

This is an ongoing investigation. The Oakland Police Department did not specify how many officers were involved in the incident.
