A person has died following a struggle with Oakland police early Saturday morning, according to the Oakland Police Department.
Officers responded to the 11000 block of Ettrick Street in the Chabot Park neighborhood around 4:15 a.m. on a report that someone had broken into a residence, according to the department.
Police also learned that the person allegedly connected to the break-in was “experiencing a medical emergency,” the department said.
When officers located the person inside a residence and tried to detain them, “a brief struggle ensued,” police said, and the person “became unresponsive.”
Paramedics provided treatment and transported the person to a hospital, where they later died, according to police.
Police did not identify the person who died and the Alameda County Coroner did not immediately respond to questions.
The Oakland Police Department’s homicide section and internal affairs bureau will investigate the in-custody death. The Oakland Police Commission, Community Police Review Agency and Alameda County District Attorney’s Office were also assigned to investigate the case.
The unidentified officer or officers involved in the death have been placed on paid administrative leave.
