A Norwalk man was shot and killed after a fight broke out at an equestrian center in South Gate over the weekend, a detective said.
The shooting, reported to police around 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, happened in the stable area of the center in the 5500 block of Leeds Street, sheriff’s Lt. Christopher Oakley said.
Juan Toro, 45, was attending a party and at some point a fight erupted and shots were fired, Oakley said.
Toro died at the scene from gunshot wounds, according to the medical examiner’s office.
“Most of the people fled before officers arrived,” Oakley said.
Detectives don’t know what started the fight, and if Toro was involved in the dispute. Investigators didn’t have a description of the suspect or suspects.
A woman who answered the phone at the equestrian center said they don’t know what happened and declined to comment.
Detectives asked that anyone with information about the shooting, possibly including any surveillance video, call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Anonymous tipsters can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or at lacrimestoppers.org.
