A Road Commission for Oakland County plow truck driver is facing a felony charge for a fatal hit-and-run in Farmington Hills on New Year’s Day.

Bryan Derryberry, a 3-year employee for the RCOC, was arraigned Monday on a charge of leaving the scene of a pedestrian fatality — a 5-year felony. Derryberry, 51, was released from custody on a $100,000 personal bond, which requires no cash or surety to be posted.

According to the Farmington Hills Police Department, Derryberry allegedly struck 68-year-old Edward Detroit, rendering him unconscious, and then drove away. Emergency responders called to the scene on a report of an unconscious man lying on the side of Middlebelt Round found Detroit there at approximately 8 a.m. on Jan. 1. Detroit was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Derryberry was identified as the suspect following efforts by the Farmington Hills Police Department’s Investigative Bureau and Traffic Safety Section, officials said.

As stated in a news release from the Farmington Hills Police Department: “Investigators determined that an RCOC plow truck was in the area at the time of the crash. Evidence recovered from the truck confirmed the vehicle was involved in the crash and that Derryberry was operating the truck at the time of the incident.”

“The quick resolution of this case is testament to the hard work of our investigators and support from the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office,” Police Chief John Piggott stated in the news release. “We’re hopeful this arrest and prosecution will bring some measure of closure for the family of the victim as this matter now moves into the judicial system.”

Derryberry’s next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 16 before 47th District Judge Marla Parker.
