BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Bakersfield Police Department identified the officer who shot a suspect in northwest Bakersfield on Dec. 29, 2025.

The officer was identified as Pedro Sarabia, according to police. Sarabia has been with the department since Nov. 6, 2023. He is on administrative leave.

According to the Bakersfield Police Department, officers attempted a traffic stop in the area of Mohawk Street and Siena Lane at 2:15 a.m. Dec. 29. The vehicle stopped on Latina Drive and Pisa Way, according to police.

One of the occupants, later identified as Fabian Lopez, fled the vehicle eastbound on foot, police said.

An officer pursued Lopez, who pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the officer.

Sarabia then shot Lopez.

Lopez is in critical but stable condition, according to the police department.

Lopez was the passenger in the vehicle that was being pursued. Police said the driver of the vehicle was cited and released.

Sarabia has not been involved in any prior officer-involved shootings, according to the police department.
