Bakersfield, CA – One person was killed on the morning of Wednesday, January 7, 2026, in a traffic collision involving a semi-truck and a Honda CR-V on Highway 223 near Wible Road, according to KGET.

The California Highway Patrol has stated that the crash was first reported at approximately 9:30 AM in the area of Highway 223 and Wible Road. Initial information indicates the collision involved a semi-truck and a Honda CR-V.

Officers arriving at the scene observed significant damage to the vehicles. CHP logs indicated smoke was visible following the crash, prompting an emergency response from fire and medical personnel.

Emergency crews secured the roadway and began life-saving efforts. The Kern County Coroner’s Office was later requested to respond, and the incident was subsequently classified as a fatality.

As part of standard procedure, CHP implemented traffic control measures to protect responders and motorists. Highway 223 was closed between Stine Road and Wible Road to allow for the investigation and recovery operations. The duration of the closure was not immediately known.

Investigators remained on scene to document evidence, determine the sequence of events, and assess contributing factors. CHP stated the cause of the crash is under investigation, and no additional details were immediately available.

Authorities advised motorists to avoid the area and use alternate routes while the investigation and roadway cleanup continued.
