Visitors to Lightscape at the San Francisco Botanical Garden walk through the “Fire Garden” which features hundreds of flame-like, glowing bulbs on the Conifer Lawn. Lightscape, which opened in November and closed for the season on Sunday, was a mile-long immersive light and music experience that transformed the garden into a “mesmerizing world of wonder”. The installation wound through the botanical gardens’ 55-acre Golden Gate Park complex. The illuminated path consisted of 11 artworks that take the shapes of objects like peonies, trees and dragonflies. Water features, music, lighted archways and lanterns accompany the specially designed pieces. Areas transformed by Lightscape include the Botanical Garden’s Conifer Lawn, where Irish artist Brian Thunder installed 300 bulbs that resemble flames and cover the area with a warm glow. Pools within the garden had floating sculptures that resemble lilies as part of “Amazonica,” a collaboration between local lighting designer Erik Cutler and Jigantics, an English light art studio. Lightscape debuted in 2012 and has appeared in U.S. cities including San Diego, and Chicago. The show has also been staged in Europe and Australia. Botanical Garden staff said the installation would return next year. (Shmuel Thaler – Santa Cruz Sentinel)

An installation called the “Neon Strawberry Tree” shined in bright colors along a path Sunday night at the San Francisco Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park. The Canary Island strawberry tree wrapped in colorful neon lights was part of the garden’s Holiday Season Lightscape immersive trail of lights. While Lightscape finished its run on Sunday, San Francisco Botanical Garden staff confirmed that the popular attraction will return in November. (Shmuel Thaler – Santa Cruz Sentinel)
