“They were down there to help victims that were still trapped,” said Alexander Clark from the Bakersfield Fire Department.

The Kern County American Red Cross provided essential services, including medical care and safe shelters.
Volunteer George Manolakas noted the strong sense of community that emerged, saying, “Even though they didn’t know each other going into the shelter, they make friends, and they eat together, and it becomes a community.”

As wildfire season is quickly approaching, the American Red Cross Kern County and Eastern Sierra Chapter is urging residents to prepare for potential emergencies. KBAK/KBFX
Clark emphasized the importance of creating defensible space around homes and having a safety plan.
