A 19-year-old man from Warren was found fatally shot in Pontiac on Wednesday in what appears to be Oakland County’s first homicide of 2026.

No arrests have been made in connection with the slaying as of midday Thursday.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Cornelius Traves Murphy, Jr. Deputies found Murphy’s body after a caller reported that a man was lying in the field next to his home, the sheriff’s office said.

.A crew from the Waterford Regional Fire Department also responded to the scene and determined the victim had been shot in the chest, the sheriff’s office said.

As an investigation continues, anyone with further information about the shooting, or who may have heard or seen something relevant at approximately 8:30 p.m. when the shooting is believed to have occurred is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP. Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information leading to an arrest in the case. Tipsters remain anonymous.
