A high school student was injured in an off-campus shooting Thursday in Long Beach, and police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The student, who attends Long Beach Polytechnic High School, was shot about 8:15 a.m. at the intersection of Long Beach Boulevard and 17th Street, a Long Beach Unified School District spokeswoman said.

He arrived at the school shortly afterward and was taken to a hospital by emergency responders, according to the district.

The school at 1600 Atlantic Ave. is two blocks away from the shooting location.

School staff rendered support and first aid to the student before he was transported, the district said.

The extent of his injury was unclear.

Long Beach police said officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 1700 block of Long Beach Boulevard about 8:25 a.m. and found evidence of a shooting but no victim.

Officers were later notified that a 15-year-old boy was being treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his lower body, according to the police.

The suspect fled before officers arrived, police said.

The school “remains safe,” with school security maintaining an increased campus presence as a precaution, according to the district.

Long Beach police were investigating the shooting, including the motive and the identity of the suspect.

“Our thoughts are with the student and his family as they focus on recovery,” according to a school district statement.
