LONG BEACH – A new year hasn’t stopped the same shootings from occuring in Long Beach as the City gears up activity to host some events for the 2028 Olympic games.

The most recent shooting involved a high school student who was injured in an off-campus shooting on Thursday in Long Beach, and police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The student, who attends Long Beach Polytechnic High School, was shot about 8:15 a.m. at the intersection of Long Beach Boulevard and 17th Street, a Long Beach Unified School District spokeswoman said.

He arrived at the school shortly afterward and was taken to a hospital by emergency responders, according to the district.

The school at 1600 Atlantic Ave. is two blocks from the shooting location.

School staff rendered support and first aid to the student before he was transported.

The extent of his injury was unclear.

The school “remains safe,” with school security maintaining an increased campus presence as a precaution, according to the district.

Long Beach police were investigating.

“Our thoughts are with the student and his family as they focus on recovery,” according to a district statement.
