A 15-year-old Long Beach Poly High School student was hospitalized Thursday morning, Jan. 8, after he was shot in the lower body about two blocks from the campus, authorities said.
Long Beach officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 1700 block of Long Beach Boulevard just before 8:25 a.m. and found evidence that a shooting had occurred, but no victims, police said.
The boy arrived at the school, at 1600 Atlantic Ave., and “immediately received support and medical attention from staff,” a Long Beach Unified School District spokesperson said. “Emergency responders were contacted, the student’s parents were notified” and police were investigating the shooting.
Police said the boy’s injury was non-life threatening and he was taken by paramedics to a hospital. The suspect fled before officers arrived.
The school was not placed under lockdown, but there was an increased presence of LBUSD School Safety staff on campus as a precaution, the district said.
“Our thoughts are with the student and his family as they focus on recovery,” the district said.
Police did not yet know a motive for the shooting.
