BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — The man who died in an officer-involved shooting during a welfare check in south Bakersfield on Jan. 2 has been identified as 41-year-old Jerry Lynn Steele Jr., of Bakersfield.

According to the Kern County coroner, the incident happened in the 3700 block of El Alisal Street at around 10:14 p.m., with Steele pronounced dead at 10:27 p.m.
The Bakersfield Police Department reported that officers were dispatched to the location near Hughes Lane at approximately 10:11 p.m. to address a peace disturbance involving a resident allegedly threatening family members with a gun. Upon arrival at around 10:20 p.m., officers encountered Steele, who was reportedly armed with a handgun and non-compliant. An officer-involved shooting ensued.

Despite medical aid being administered, Steele was pronounced dead at the scene. Police confirmed that the officers involved were equipped with body-worn cameras, which recorded the incident.
The footage will be made public as the investigation progresses. The officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
