BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Kern County Coroner’s Office identified a man who was reportedly threatening his family members before getting shot by officers in south Bakersfield.

Coroner officials identified him as Jerry Lynn Steele Jr., 41, of Bakersfield. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Bakersfield Police Department said officers were called to a home in the 3700 block of El Alisal Street at around 10:11 p.m. Jan. 2 for a welfare check of a man who was involved in a disturbance at a home. The department said the man, identified as Steele, was threatening family members.

Officials said officers contacted Steele but he “was not compliant” and was armed with a handgun. The department did not further describe what happened leading up to officers shooting him.

A statement from police did not say if Steele fired the handgun or if he threatened officers.

In home surveillance video shared with 17 News, multiple gunshots can be heard from the incident.
