San Diego police officers have closed multiple city streets downtown and warned residents to avoid the area while they investigate a suspicious package found Friday night.

The incident was first reported around 5:15 p.m. near Broadway and Front Street, according to Officer Anthony Carrasco. The intersection is home to multiple high-rises, including the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Courthouse.

Officers who arrived at the scene quickly called the Metro Arson Strike Team, or MAST, to help with the investigation, Carrasco said. The team consists of San Diego police officers and firefighters who specialize in, among other things, investigating suspicious packages and possible explosive devices.

Carrasco said MAST investigators were using remotely controlled robots to check the package and determine if there was a threat.

As of 7 p.m., Broadway was closed between Front Street and State Street, Union Street between C Street and E Street and Front Street from C Street to Broadway, the department said in a statement posted to X.

“Please avoid the area and use alternate routes while officers investigate,” police said in the statement.

No other information was immediately available.
