An 8-year-old child was critically injured after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head in Pittsburgh’s California-Kirkbride neighborhood Saturday morning. According to Public Information Officer Eliza Durham, Pittsburgh police and EMS were called to the 900 block of Kirkbride Street just before 10 a.m. following reports of a shooting. When officials arrived at the scene, they said an 8-year-old boy was found with a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to a Pittsburgh-area hospital in critical condition. Durham said the boy is currently in surgery. Officials said it appeared that the 8-year-old and his 7-year-old sibling were in the basement playing with the firearm when it discharged. We’re told the 7-year-old, along with a teen who was at the house at the time of the incident, has been taken to police headquarters for further questioning. Police said at this time, a gun has not been recovered from the scene. “If you have a firearm in your residence, it’s incredibly important to properly secure those, and especially if you have children in the house, that those are not made easily accessible,” Durham said. Officials said at this time, there are currently no charges. This is a developing story. Download the WTAE app to stay connected with breaking news.
