(FOX40.COM) — After weeks of speculation, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced on Sunday night that he will not run for governor in the 2026 race.

According to Bonta, he has chosen to run for reelection as the State’s Attorney General in the coming election. In a statement, he said the following:

“The outpouring of encouragement from supporters, friends, and family to jump into the Governor’s race has sharpened my focus and reminded me how grateful I am to work with so many who care so deeply for this state. But my resolve is firm: our fight against corporate greed and vicious attacks from Washington requires a leader with battle-tested experience in the courtroom.“

Bonta, who has served in the role since 2021, added: “Watching this dystopian horror come to life has reaffirmed something I feel in every fiber of my being: in this moment, my place is here — shielding Californians from the most brazen attacks on our rights and our families.”

“My vision for the California Department of Justice is that we remain the nation’s largest and most powerful check on power,” Bonta added. “We aren’t just defending the status quo; we are securing the California Dream for the next generation. Let’s finish what we started – together.”

This announcement puts an end to months of uncertainty surrounding Bonta’s political future as California’s 2026 gubernatorial field continues to take shape.

The primary election is scheduled for June 2, and the general election will take place on Nov. 3.
