Here are the three takeaways from Sunday afternoon’s defeat:

A late power-play goal decides this game

Offense was hard to come by in this game, with both teams not being sharp with their execution, and the goaltenders played well. Neither team could convert on their power plays, including a five-on-three for 41 seconds for the Reign, but Bakersfield got a power play late in the game off a Jared Wright roughing infraction.

After Condors defenseman Riley Stillman leveled Reign forward Kenta Isogai near the Ontario blue line, Wright came to his teammate’s aid but was hit with a roughing penalty. Bakersfield, with the AHL’s second-best power play entering the day, got its fourth opportunity of the day and struck gold on Viljami Marjala’s wrister from the inner slot for the game’s first goal with 2:05 remaining.

Wright rarely takes penalties, but this one proved to be costly. It’s always good to see a player stick up for their teammates, especially from a rookie, but this is one he will learn from, as time and situation play a key factor.

Pheonix Copley plays well

The score will not indicate how tight and close the game was, but Pheonix Copley rebounded after allowing three goals in the Reign’s 4-3 victory over the Wild on Wednesday. Copley stopped 20 of 21 shots as he was on his game in the first period, as Bakersfield outshot Ontario 10-4 in those 20 minutes.

Another strong game from Kenny Connors

Although Kenny Connors had a -2 rating, I thought he had an outstanding game in the defensive zone. The first-year pro displayed solid stick detail and made the smart play, as he has shown most of the season. His best play came in the third period as he had a tremendous backcheck to deny Quinn Hutson from getting a shot attempt on his breakaway and knocking him off the puck.

NOTES:

*Kaleb Lawrence returned to the lineup after missing the previous 32 games with an injury. He played as the centerman on the fourth line.

*This was the third time this season that the Reign entered the third period in a deadlock tie at zero. They are 1-2-0-0 in those games.

*Seth Griffith (0-2-2), Quin Hutson (1-1-2), Viljami Marjala (2-0-2), and Brady Stonehouse (0-2-2) all finished with multi-point games for the Condors.

*The Reign’s streak of scoring at least a power-play goal in five games was snapped as they went 0/4 on the man advantage.

*With the loss, the Reign were shut out for the second time this season.
