ANAHEIM, CA — Cady Brown, a senior at the University of Montana Western and member of the Southwest Counties Farm Bureau, recently took the national stage at the 107th American Farm Bureau Convention (AFBF).

Brown competed in the Young Farmer & Rancher Discussion Meet, advancing to the “Sweet Sixteen” after successfully navigating two preliminary rounds.

The AFBF Discussion Meet differs from traditional debates by simulating a committee meeting. Participants are assessed on their ability to exchange ideas, build consensus and solve industry challenges.

This year’s topics included urban sprawl, land use, succession planning for family farms and environmental stewardship.

“It’s very competitive, but it’s also fun because you hear from young farmers and ranchers from all over the country, not just your state,” Brown said. “Being in these events encourages you to sharpen your speaking skills and deepens your knowledge of Farm Bureau policy.”

Originally from Three Forks, Montana, Brown is pursuing a business degree with a minor in equine management. Despite not growing up on a farm, she gained experience through 4-H, FFA and ranch work since age 14.

Brown previously won the 2024 MFBF Collegiate Discussion Meet and currently serves as the president of the UM Western Collegiate Chapter.

The American Farm Bureau Convention, highlighting young producers’ roles in agriculture, runs through January 14 in Anaheim.
