October 19, 2025 – Fresno Police Department officials are heartbroken to announce the passing of retired K-9 Gunner. Gunner poured his heart and soul into serving and protecting our community and held the same deep love for his family in his retirement years.

Officer Young and Gunner began their partnership on May 7, 2014. Gunner was a Belgian Malinois who served as an explosive detection and patrol dog. During his career, Gunner assisted with keeping officers safe, had numerous deployments and was a favorite of the community. Gunner was often requested at many school demos as the kids truly loved him. Gunner could easily switch between working on a call for service to lying in the lap of his favorite people.

He retired in August 25, 2021, where he quickly adapted to the retirement life. He lived out the rest of his years at home enjoying long walks and many naps with the Young family.

He peacefully passed away on October 16th, 2025.

Gunner was loved by many and will be truly missed.

Thank you to Armstrong Pet Hospital for their compassion and kindness as we said goodbye to our loved family member.
