The Edmonton Oilers have signed the AHL’s second leading goal scorer Quinn Hutson, Edmonton’s top prospect on the Bakersfield Condors, to a two year extension at $875,000.
Puckpedia reports: “The Oilers signed 24 y/o F Quinn Hutson to a 2 year $875K cap hit extension
Yr 1: $850K Salary, $400K Minors, $500K Guaranteed
Yr 2: $900K Salary
Will be RFA upon expiry with $945K QO.”
Here’s some of the early online reaction, which, for the first time in some time, was entirely positive:

I like this. Get some cost certainty and if it doesn’t work… you can bury it all. Also shows that the talk about the player being “mad” about how they’re handling him was way off.

Him being upset and the org letting his die on the vine are wild narratives – you know given, less than two weeks ago the kid expressed how happy he was to have signed in Edmonton and that things are progressing faster than he could have imagined!

Great signing. I like the the price point and timeline on it. Either he is is a top 9 player or a minor league tweener by then

Great signing. Play him next season please

Quinn Hutson currently is 2nd in the AHL with 23 goals and 3rd in points with 38.
He also has 21 goals in his last 20 GP with the Condors He is tracking to be a full time
Edmonton Oilers by the start of the 2026-27 season…or sooner!

What a steal!

Lane and Cole obviously rock, but I’ve always admired Quinn Hutson’s game and how he never stops working. 2nd in AHL goal scoring in his first pro season. Has all the makings of a quality depth NHL player.

LOVE THIS!!! Congrats to Quinn Hutson!

This is the contract that Holland was instructed to get Holloway and Broberg signed to that he decided not to do. Not the price point, but the term and the timing of it. The ycould stand to play the kids more but at least we’re not facing offer sheet issues this summer.

Very much deserved. He’s leading the AHL in goals as a rookie. Would like to see him on the Oilers full time by next season.

Excited on this one. Very very good player here . Hutson/ Howard on the wing next year with a defensive minded vet centre who has some hands , watch that cooook. Kids earned it. I’d start giving him some actual NHL time though so he’s not a full blown rookie though. Sit Janmark , get rid of mangiapanne.

A fantastic extension for a player who can do great things in Edm’s mid 6…I cannot emphasize enough how powerful of a signing this is. Edm now has Savoie, Howard, and Hutson on supremely cheap deals which allow them to attack huge assets for next season so these players can be signed to term and big cap savings like what you are seeing in Montreal and Carolina.

Great signing for the Oil! 2 years is big here but more importantly this clearly states there’s been conversations about a future here. Great find by the Oil!
My take
1. This is indeed excellent news, hence the widespread applause around Oil Country. It’s important because Hutson has stormed his way into pro hockey, scoring goals at an astonishing clip as a 24 year old rookie. It would be all the more astonishing if he were a few years younger, but even at his age that’s exactly what you’d hope to see out of a prospect signed out of the U.S. college system.
2. Between Hutson, Matt Savoie, Ike Howard and Viljami Marjala the Oilers now have four smaller, high-skill forwards battling to make the Oilers. If two of them find a way to stick in the Oilers Top 9 and become 20 goal, 20 assist NHLers, the Oilers will have hit the jackpot here. Given how well all four are playing, it’s no stretch to hope for that. Indeed, it would not be a shocker to see one of them become a 30 goal, 30 assist player.
The Oilers also have three bigger AHL prospects in Roby Jarventie, Josh Samanski and Connor Clattenburg who might well help out in the NHL in the next two years.
3. Hutson is evidently sharp, as his two year deal provides a passive incentive for the Oilers to give him a full shot at making the team. He’s only earning the league minimum salary, so this allows the Oilers to play Hutson, but also sign more expensive players with their tight cap collars. And if Huston plays the next two years in Edmonton on a top two line with either Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl, he’s going to be in a for a huge new contract.
