LONG BEACH — Junior guard Tylan Kinsey stepped up down the stretch and scored 10 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter to lead the St. Anthony boys basketball team to a 57-55 victory at home over St. Pius X-St. Matthias in a Del Rey League game Monday night.
“We feel like we can win league,” Kinsey said. “We feel like we can go far in the playoffs too. These kinds of games make us look like we can compete with anybody.”
St. Anthony improved to 11-7 overall and 2-1 in the Del Rey League. Junior guard Jamil House led the defending league champions by scoring 15 of his team-high 19 points in the first half.
“You have to take them and you have to earn them,” said St. Anthony coach Alan Mitchell after his team rallied in the fourth quarter for the win.
St. Pius trailed 57-55 with 9 seconds left, but they still had a chance to win. However, Warriors sophomore guard Leonardo Rojas’ potential game-winning 3-point attempt rimmed out just before the buzzer.
Senior guard Kayleb Kearse led St. Pius (11-7, 1-2) with 19 points but he fouled out with 1:10 to go. Senior guard Dominic Gallardo added 10 points.
Warriors coach Donte Archie openly expressed his dismay with referees for calling consecutive fouls on his team in the fourth quarter, which he believes cost his team the win.
“Just let the kids decide the game,” Archie said. “That’s all. If they hit a jumper and they made it and they beat us, we’ve been beat. This is our 7th loss. We’ve been beaten six times but that right there was too obvious.”
House put St. Anthony up 2-0 early. Kearse tied the game at 2. Senior forward Dayvion Gates’ and-one put St. Pius up 7-4 with 3:56 left in the first quarter. St. Anthony junior guard Reivier Hondo’s 3-pointer tied the game at 10.
The Saints led 12-10 at the end of the first.
St. Pius sophomore guard Fox Narvaez, who transferred from St. Anthony, scored six of his team’s first eight points to go up 16-12 early in the second quarter. Narvaez finished with nine points.
However, the Saints went on an 11-0 run, which consisted of eight points by House and a momentous 3-pointer by by junior guard J.R. Quinn.
St. Anthony led 30-24 at halftime.
However, St. Pius outscored St. Anthony by an 18-9 margin in the third quarter to establish a 42-39 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
Kinsey’s and-one put St. Anthony up 45-44 with 5:56 left in the fourth.
“I just felt like we needed that spark, that energy,” Kinsey continued.
Consecutive layups by Warriors senior guard Christian Clayman put St. Pius back up 48-45. Kinsey’s layup cut it to 48-47 with 4:09 to go. Kinsey’s 3-pointer gave St. Anthony a 50-48 lead.
Kearse made two free throws to tie it at 50 all. St. Anthony senior Esten Wilson’s jumper put his team up 52-50. Kearse’s layup tied it at 52 all. House made 1 of 2 free throws to go 53-52 with 1:16 to go.
Six seconds later, Kearse fouled out while applying on-ball pressure to Kinsey in the backcourt. Kinsey drained both free throws to go 55-52. Gates made 1 of 2 free throws to cut it 55-53 with less than a minute to go.
Quinn made both free throws, which ended up being the game-clinching points, to go up 57-53 with 16.9 seconds to go.
“They are buying into it at the right time,” Mitchell continued.
However, St. Pius kept fighting as freshman guard Darrellreon Morris’ coast-to-coast layup cut it to 57-55 with 10.5 to go. Morris’ bucket was part of a potential three-point play but he missed the free throw. However, St. Anthony could not corral the rebound, which gave St. Pius the ball back down two points with nine seconds to go.
The Warriors did get a shot up but Rojas’ 3-point attempt rimmed out just before the buzzer.
St. Pius will host St. Monica, the Del Rey League’s first place team, on Wednesday. St. Anthony will play at St. Paul on Wednesday.
