1. LA County, city launch $2.8M sidewalk vending cart giveaway program
Los Angeles County and city officials Monday launched a $2.8 million program to provide more than 280 health-code-compliant food vending carts for sidewalk vendors.
The Sidewalk Vending Cart Program will provide carts as they are built and become available. Applications are now open and will be reviewed on a monthly basis for eligibility and cart type, with a priority based on compliance readiness and locations in high and highest-need areas, according to the county’s Equity Explorer Map.
Applicants will be selected by lottery as well.
As part of the first round, the county and city have 50 hot-holding and 30 cold-holding carts ready to give away with another 40 carts to be manufactured.
Applications may take up 12 weeks for processing. The LA County Department of Economic Opportunity will provide regular updates on awards and distribution.
2. Here’s how to register for a chance to buy tickets to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics
Registration opens this week for a chance to buy tickets to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Fans can sign up starting Wednesday to be entered into a lottery for a time slot to purchase tickets.
Those who live near Los Angeles and Oklahoma City, which is hosting two events, will be able to access the first time slots.
The 2028 Olympics will be the largest games in history, with more than 11,000 athletes across 51 sports. LA28 has said it will release 14 million tickets for the Olympics and Paralympics, which would set a record, surpassing the 12 million sold for the Paris Olympics.

3. The Trevor Project receives $45M from MacKenzie Scott after difficult years and federal funding cuts
The nonprofit Trevor Project received a $45 million gift from billionaire MacKenzie Scott at the end of 2025. The organization is known for running a hotline for LGBTQ+ youth.
The gift announced Monday comes after the Trump administration stopped providing specific support for gay, trans and gender nonconforming young people who called the 988 National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
The Trevor Project was one of the nonprofits that staffed that option and lost $25 million in funding. Scott’s fortune largely comes from from her ex-husband Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. She gave away more than $7 billion in 2025.

Dear Hospital uses storytelling to help address health care worker burnout
State data shows nearly 60% of counties in California will face a nursing shortage. By 2033, the state is estimated to be short more than 61,000 nurses, partially due to retention.
But a program called “Dear Hospital” at Rady Children’s Health Orange County is working to reduce health care worker burnout.
The hospital’s director of nursing research and innovation, Jennifer Hayakawa, introduced the program to the hospital in October 2022 after experiencing a similar program called “Dear World” at a national nursing conference. The organization is known for its portraiture and storytelling workshops. She says the storytelling program was reworked to tailor health care workers. She says storytelling can be a powerful tool to help address health care worker burnout.
