How music shaped actor BD Wong’s career

  • January 13, 2026

On The Standard’s podcast “Life in Seven Songs,” we ask some of the world’s most fascinating people: What music tells the story of your life?

BD Wong rose to fame with a Tony Award-winning performance as Song Liling in the 1988 Broadway musical “M. Butterfly.” He went on to star in films that included “Jurassic Park” and had a 14-year run portraying Dr. George Huang on the TV series “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” Through all his successes and achievements, he faced personal obstacles, including the challenges of being a gay Asian American actor.

In this episode of “Life in Seven Songs,” Wong details his journey from growing up in the Sunset, where he nurtured his love of musical theater, to New York City, where he lived in an apartment that he suspected was owned by the Mafia. He talks about how the loss of his child transformed him a more confident public speaker and advocate, and how, as an industry veteran, he’s championing Asian representation in entertainment.
