Summer sent us a postcard this week, which is a bit surprising due to the fact that winter has been wintering rather powerfully around Southern California.

As for the postcard’s message? It said this: Go to Santa Monica Pier Jan. 15 for a drive-in movie night, one that will feature a film that has been synonymous with summertime for nearly 50 years: “Grease,” oh yeah.

In fact, and rather surprisingly, and hold onto your hats, beach towels, and sunblock, too: This is the “first-ever” drive-in movie event at the famous ocean-close attraction.

Entry is free, space is limited, there will be places for chairs and blankets (if you don’t want to watch from a vehicle), and other diversions will add to the upbeat evening affair.

“Diversions” is a pretty general promise, so here’s what to expect: DJ tunes, a bar for the 21-plus contingent, classic cars on view, and a costume contest.

The sartorial showdown’s theme should be obvious: Arrive in your Pink Lady get-up or something inspired by the T-Birds, or at least the 1950s. Think poodle skirts, rolled-up sleeves on tees, and stiffly ironed dungarees, or really anything that feels mid-century in spirit.

Pacific Park is presenting the seems-like-summer-but-its-actually-winter whimsy and securing your free entry before rolling for Santa Monica Pier on Jan. 15 is essential.

We’re hopelessly devoted to the idea that more Drive-In Movie Nights may soon grace that salty and celebrated landmark in the months to come, but even if this is a one-and-done sort of event, we’re gratefully basking in the summer-meets-winter vibe.

The Drive-In Movie Night is, however, part of the popular Locals’ Night series, which pops up once each month on the third Thursday. Watch the socials for more summer-ish fun times soon to come at Santa Monica Pier.
