A Sacramento nonprofit needs volunteers for the January Point-In-Time count to help secure funding for homelessness programs.

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — A Sacramento nonprofit is seeking volunteers to help count the unsheltered population in late January to help secure vital federal funding.

The Point-In-Time (PIT) count will take place on Jan. 26-27, throughout the county, including the cities of Sacramento, Elk Grove, Folsom and Rancho Cordova.

“The Point-in-Time Count is one of the most important ways we listen to our neighbors experiencing life without stable housing,” said Lisa Bates, CEO of Sacramento Steps Forward.

Volunteers will be tasked with going out into the communities to count the number of people experiencing homelessness. The data is then sent to the U.S. Department of Urban Development to track progress on how communities are addressing the issue.

The count occurs biannually. In 2024, Sacramento County saw a 41% drop in unsheltered homelessness and received $40.5 million in federal Continuum of Care funding. Most of that funding went to permanent supportive housing programs serving over 2,100 people.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, able to travel by foot or car, and willing to use their personal smartphone for data collection. The count will take place between 5-11 p.m.

Last day to register is Jan. 16. More information can be found here: https://www.sacramentostepsforward.org/data-and-analytics/sacramento-point-in-time-count/
