Long Beach to lower a second speed limit later this month

  • January 14, 2026

LONG BEACH, Miss. (WLOX) – Long Beach will be lowering another speed limit next week, which will be the second speed limit to be lowered in a month.

This time, East Railroad Street from Jeff Davis Avenue to the Gulfport city limits will be lowered from 40 to 30 miles per hour. This is the same speed limit as West Railroad Street in Gulfport.

An idea brought up by Alderman Joey Giuffria of Ward 3.

“We’re not waiting for something bad to occur and then do something about it,” said Ward 3 Alderman Joey Giuffria. ”We see this as a potential hazard, so we are doing whatever we can to minimize any types of problems and to increase the safety for our citizens, which is first and foremost.”

Being a gateway to Gulfport, Alderman Giuffria said Railroad Street is one of the busiest roads in the city. With no sidewalks along the road for pedestrians, Giuffria felt it was time to make the change.

“If we had sidewalks, we probably wouldn’t be looking at lowering speed limits and so forth,” said Alderman Giuffria. ”Until then, until we have the capital to do those types of projects, we have to do whatever we can do to mitigate any types of problems.”

As the speed limit changes, Long Beach Police will be keeping a close eye on the road. Captain Patrick Craig with Long Beach PD said the department hopes to make the transition as easy as possible.

“It’s our goal in this transition period to acclimate our citizens where they can get used to the 30 miles per hour speed limit,” said Capt. Craig. ”We’re going to advise our officers to write courtesies and give verbal warnings. We just want to help our citizens get to where the speeding isn’t going to be a problem.”

The Board of Aldermen voted 3-2 to reduce the speed limit during a board meeting last month.

The speed limit will be lowered on Tuesday, January 20.
