FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – One person was killed, and many were injured in a multi-vehicle crash in Fresno Sunday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.
Just after 9:15 a.m., the CHP was alerted to a crash involving roughly 15 vehicles, including a semi truck, on the southbound lanes of Highway 99 between North and Cedar Avenues.
According to CHP, fog is believed to be a major factor, as visibility was severely impacted and was limited to less than an estimated 15 feet, investigators said.
Additionally, officers said that the crash appears to have occurred after vehicles in the number one and number two lanes slowed down. The vehicles traveling behind them were traveling too fast to avoid a collision, leading to a series of other crashes.
Investigators said injuries ranged from mostly minor to moderate; however, one person succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
Those with minor injuries were transported to an area hospital by a Fresno FAX bus.
The roadway is expected to be impacted for several more hours, and motorists are advised to find alternate routes to their destinations. The CHP said that southbound Highway 41 is an option as the roadway is clear after Cedar Avenue, and then drivers can get back onto Highway 99.
The CHP is asking if anyone has dashcam or other video of what led up to the crash to contact them at 559-705-2200.
