FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — The Fresno Chaffee Zoo released a statement in response to the “Top 10 Worst Zoos for Elephants” article.
In Defense of Animals released an article claiming that the Fresno Chaffee Zoo ranked in 9th place in a top ten list of “Worst Zoos for Elephants.”
The article claims the Fresno Chaffee Zoo has been practicing breeding programs that force unnaturally early, rapid breeding and invasive reproductive procedures, leading to shortened lifespans and devastating calf losses.
IDA has also claimed that the Fresno Chaffee Zoo has made the list for the third time.
The Fresno Chaffee Zoo released a statement about the article.
“Fresno Chaffee Zoo has been made aware of our presence on a list produced by In Defense of Animals (IDA). This organization’s statements about our animal care and facilities are inaccurate, out of context, or entirely false.”
“Fresno Chaffee Zoo has been an accredited facility by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) since 1979. We participate in Species Survival Plans (SSP) for many of the animals in our care, including African elephants.”
“Furthermore, we believe that claims and decisions regarding an animal’s health and well-being should be made by experts who have dedicated their lives to the care of these magnificent creatures.”
“Fresno Chaffee Zoo is proud to focus on our mission to inspire people to care for animals, create connections, build community, and save wildlife.”
