CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball finished off the season sweep of San Francisco on Sunday with a dominant, 3-0 sweep in the match.
The Beavers (12-5, 6-1 WCC) used a strong hitting day (.376) while keeping the Dons’ offense in check for their sixth league win in the last seven tries.
With the win, Oregon State has won their last four in the comforts of Gill Coliseum.
A trio of Beavs – Lauren Rumel (15), Annika Hester (11) and Alana Marrs (10) – reached double-digit kills while Jackie Matias’ 24 assists kept the Oregon State offense humming. Tia Shum used 11 digs to pace the defense while Marrs and Rumel each had a solo block.
Key Rumel kills and aces from Matias and Alondra Paz helped the Beavs break an 11-all deadlock into an 18-11 lead in the late stages of the first set. While the Dons eked a little closer at five (23-18) late, the Beavers held off the visitors and brought the final lead up to seven with a 25-18 margin to secure the first set. The leaders in the frame were Rumel with five kills and Emma Lilo dished five assists while Matias dug out seven Dons attacks.
Nearly trading ties until the scoreboard read 20 apiece, the Beavers used a 5-1 run to put the Dons on the brink with a 2-0 set advantage. A Rumel kill capped off the run that was opened by a few from Marrs and another from Hester to pressure the hosts. Oregon State battled back from a four-point deficit (14-10) before taking a lead at 20-19.
Unlike in their previous meeting where the Dons stole the third set, the Beavers used a dominant third to complete the sweep – winning by 10 at 25-15. The Beavers hit at a .519 hitting efficiency, taking charge with a 15-5 run and sealing the win. Lilo and Matias used six assists apiece to keep the attack at a high while Rumel (6) and Marrs (5) led the way, combining for 11 kills. Following the teams splitting the first 20 of the set, the Beavers showed their skill and broke it open with a 9-2 run before the Dons called for a timeout. Facing a second set – and match – point, Rumel used one last kill of a Lilo assist to seal the win.
The Beavers will be back on the road for the next time out when they’ll meet Pepperdine on Thursday, October 23. First serve from Malibu, Calif., is set for 6 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
