San Diego State set one program record on Wednesday and tied another.
And now they move on to an unprecedented match of records in a Mountain West Conference showdown.
Tying a school record with 14 3-point baskets, SDSU dominated the second and fourth quarters at Viejas Arena on Wednesday afternoon to defeat New Mexico 73-56 before a “Field Trip Game” turnout of 8,054 — the largest crowd ever to see an Aztecs women’s basketball home game.
The Aztecs’ ninth straight victory set up a first-ever Mountain West match between two 7-0 teams as San Diego State visits UNLV on Saturday afternoon.
With long-range bombs from Kennedy Lee, CJ Latta and Alyssa Jackson triggering runs of 12-0 in the second quarter and 8-0 spanning the third and fourth quarters, the Aztecs outscored the Lobos 48-22 over the final 10 minutes of both halves.
But it was as much the 13-3 Aztecs’ defense and San Diego State’s ability to hold its own on the boards after the first quarter that turned back New Mexico (12-6, 4-3).
The Aztecs and Lobos entered the game as the top two 3-point shooting teams in the Mountain West. While the Aztecs went 14 for 27 from beyond the arc Wednesday, New Mexico was 8 for 23. And after the first quarter, New Mexico’s edge in rebounding was 23-22.
“The defense was the key,” said SDSU coach Stacie Terry-Hutson. “It’s 3s or layups for them. We struggled early with rebounds and getting out quick. That changed after the first quarter. If we can defend like that for extended minutes, we’re going to be successful. We worked to take away the 3s and the drives.”

And when the Aztecs started hitting their 3-pointers, they dominated.
Latta hit a pair of 3s to get the hosts going in the second quarter and Lee added three before halftime as the Aztecs turned a 25-13 second quarter deficit into a 35-29 lead at the break. And after New Mexico pulled even at 47-47 with 40 seconds to play in the third quarter, Jackson buried a 3 from the corner to make it 50-47 and put the Aztecs ahead to stay.
“It was CJ who got us going in the first half and Alyssa in the second half,” said Terry-Hutson.
Lee led the Aztecs with 15 points and nine rebounds and was 5 for 8 from 3-point distance. Point guard Nala Williams had 14 points, five assists, three steals and two blocked shots. Jackson and forward Bailey Barnhard had 11 points apiece; Barnhard, a Del Norte High School grad, added five rebounds.
“At halftime, Coach grabbed a couple of us and said, ‘They can’t get offensive rebounds,’” said Lee.

San Diego State’s nine-game winning streak is the program’s longest in 13 seasons. And the 7-0 start to conference play is its best mark in 14 seasons.
Now, it’s onto Saturday’s showdown in Las Vegas.
“UNLV has been the best team in our conference recently,” said Terry-Hutson. “I’m anxious to see how we match up. But we’re not playing for wins. We’re playing to reach our maximum.”
