Re “Death toll from Iranian protests surpasses 2,000, activists say” (Jan. 13): I am an Iranian-American living in San Diego, and I am writing out of deep concern for what is happening in Iran right now. Reports indicate that Iranian security forces are killing protesters, while the government has shut down the internet nationwide to prevent the world from seeing these abuses.

Internet shutdowns in Iran are not technical failures; they are deliberate tools used to hide violence. When communication goes dark, people are killed in silence. This has happened before, and the consequences were devastating.

President Trump has stated that the United States would act if the Iranian government kills its opposition. If that statement is to mean anything, this moment demands urgent attention. Public awareness and media coverage are essential when a regime tries to operate in the dark.
