The story of Hamnet and film adaptation

The film and stage adaptations of Hamnet are based on Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel of the same name. The story focuses on the lives of William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes (Anne) Hathaway, in the wake of the death of their 11-year-old son, Hamnet. Shakespeare eventually channels the pain of this loss into writing Hamlet.

Even if you’re not familiar with the story of Hamnet, it’s likely on your radar right now as the 2025 film adaptation is currently receiving widespread acclaim. Directed by Chloé Zhao and starring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, the film has already received major awards for “Best Motion Picture – Drama” and “Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama” for Buckley at the Golden Globes. Buckley also won the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Actress.
