FRIDAY –
The SAN DIEGO RODEO is happening at Petco Park all weekend long.
The BORREGO SPRINGS FILM FESTIVAL starts at noon today.
Former MAD TV cast member and comedian BOBBY LEE will be at Balboa Theatre DOWNTOWN on Friday and Saturday night.
In sports, the SAN DIEGO GULLS have a home game, at Pechanga Arena.
The SOUL PERSUADERS will perform at Humphrey’s Backstage Music Club on SHELTER ISLAND.
SATURDAY –
The AZTECS hoop it up at Viejas Arena against the University of New Mexico. You can also hear the game on San Diego Sports 760 starting at 4pm.
Another GULLS game at Pechanga Arena, this one against the Coachella Valley Firebirds.
One of the best guitarists in rock – BUCKETHEAD – is playing at the Music Box DOWNTOWN. I’m not sure what his real name is, but I’ve seen him live a few times, and he can shred, and play classical pieces – all while wearing a KFC bucket of 20-pieces on his head. I’m guessing it was a lot easier for the Unknown Comic to tell jokes with a bag over his head on the Gong Show. But I digress.
From hardcore guitarists to the other end of the spectrum – MARIACHI VARGAS DE TECALITLAN, doing the Mariachi thang at the Civic Theatre DOWNTOWN.
A Carpenters tribute band – TOP OF THE WORLD – will perform at The Sound in DEL MAR.
SUNDAY –
The 44th ANNUAL DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. PARADE will run from 11 to 1 at the Embarcadaro. This year they added a 5K run/walk to the festivities.
For sports, you’ve got some pro volleyball with the SAN DIEGO MOJO playing the Atlanta Vibe, a team name that sounds like a smooth jazz radio station.
And on the subject of jazz, if that’s your genre, you’ve got a lot of choices Sunday. If you want to do something different, try SUNSET JAZZ CITY CRUISES. You can listen to some jazz artists, with a buffet, while watching the San Diego sunset on a boat.
There’s also going to be SUNDAY NIGHT JAZZ at Tio Leo’s, and MLK JAZZ FEST at Humphrey’s, as well as a JAZZ JAM at Mr. Peabody’s in Encinitas.
Country singer CODY JINKS will be at Petco Park.
Former teen idol SHAUN CASSIDY is at the Magnolia Performing Arts Center in EL CAJON. For those of you that had a poster of him on your bedroom wall – he’s 67 now. Don’t you feel old?
One of the funkiest men in music history – GEORGE CLINTON & PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC will be at the Music Box DOWNTOWN.
THE TEMPTATIONS and THE FOUR TOPS will be at Harrah’s Casino. Not sure how many of the original members are still part of those groups.
AT THE MOVIES –
THE CHORAL
This is a period piece set in 1916. World War I is in full swing and a local choir in England is short male voices (as many of them are fighting in the war). A prestigious musician and conductor is brought in to run the show (played brilliantly by Ralph Fiennes). The problem is, we’ve seen many of these types of movies before, and this one can be a bit slow. And this might sound like a weird complaint for a film like this, but…there’s too much singing! I wanted a bit more of an interesting story. 2 stars out of 5.
A PRIVATE LIFE
It’s always a good sign when Jodie Foster has a new movie coming out. It’s always a bad sign when there’s a new French film. They usually disappoint me. And while Foster’s performance is good – as a psychiatrist who starts investigating a patient’s suicide that could be a murder – the film goes down too many paths you find hard to believe. Actor Daniel Auteuil is likeable as her ex-husband, but again, it’s hard to believe he’s going along with all the craziness that starts happening. Most people will find the movie boring. Some won’t like that it’s in French and subtitled. I like that it reminded me of the psychiatrist scenes in “House of Games” (David Mamet’s first film), and the underrated Julia Louis-Dreyfus movie “You Hurt My Feelings” from a few years ago. See one of those instead. 1 ½ stars out of 5.
28 YEARS LATER: THE BONE TEMPLE
Since I hated “28 Years Later” last year, I had no desire to see this movie, just a year later. Sure, Ralph Fiennes is the best thing in the previous one, and this features him. If you liked the post-apocalyptic zombie film the last time, you’ll probably love this latest in the series. Since I didn’t watch it, I won’t give it a star rating.
