After years of playing home matches at the Coliseum, the Oakland Roots may soon have a new location where they could build a temporary and then permanent soccer stadium.
The Port of Oakland has reportedly selected the Oakland Roots Sports Club as one of two competing finalists to redevelop Howard Terminal, a 55-acre waterfront property near Jack London Square. The other finalist is the Industrial Realty Group, a Los Angeles-based real estate development and investment firm that has proposed using Howard Terminal for maritime trade.
As first reported by the San Francisco Business Times, port staff wrote in a Jan. 13 letter that they will recommend to the Port Commission pursuing an exploratory agreement with the two finalists.
The future of Howard Terminal has long been a sore spot for Oakland.
The port, which owns Howard Terminal, put out a request for proposals in September 2024 for maritime projects or mixed-use developments on the waterfront site west of Jack London Square. Before this, the port had an exclusive agreement with the Athletics baseball team’s owners to transform Howard Terminal into a multibillion-dollar ballpark with housing, retail, and offices. However, the A’s deal failed in 2023. The A’s ended negotiations to move to Las Vegas via Sacramento.
The port’s Board of Port Commissioners will discuss its plans for Howard Terminal during a closed session at its next meeting on Jan. 22, though the Roots and Industrial Realty Group are not mentioned in the meeting agenda.
As reported by RootsBlog, The Town’s soccer club submitted a proposal in December 2024 to build a new stadium at Howard Terminal. The proposal included a 15,000-seat temporary modular stadium and a permanent 25,000-seat stadium.
Over 100 companies expressed interest in redeveloping the site, including the San Francisco-based real estate giant Prologis, according to The Real Deal.
The Oakland Roots and Industrial Realty Group did not immediately respond to requests for comment. We will update this story when we hear back.
