The California field hockey team’s defense was tested early and often on the way to a 6-2 loss against No. 5 Syracuse at Kentner Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Bears’ two goals from Liz Klompmaker and Zara Schmitz were the most the Demon Deacons gave up in ACC play this season. Cal (6-7, 2-5 ACC) had to defend 18 Wake Forest (13-2, 6-0) shots while taking nine.
Â
For the second time in the last three games, Delphine Ayitey-Hammond tied her career high with seven saves. Klompmaker’s score, assisted by Lieve Schalk and Emma Becker, was her 12th of the season and 26th of her career, putting her just two away from tying for the 10th spot on Cal’s all-time career list.
Â
Wake Forest went on the attack early and drew a penalty corner just two minutes into the contest which Mia Schoenbeck capitalized on for one of her four scores of the afternoon. The Demon Deacons scored twice more in the second period. Klompmaker’s score didn’t come until four minutes into the third period after the Bears earned a penalty corner.
Â
Schmitz’s goal came with less than four minutes left in the game when Klompmaker inbounded the ball and sent it into the circle. Schmitz was able to take the ball of a Wake Forest deflection and score her third goal of the season.
“I’m disappointed with the weekend, but I am not concerned about the scoreline,” Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey Shellie Onstead said. “We played a better game than Friday and that was our goal. We just need to trust our systems that are already in place and work smarter under pressure. If you only saw the fourth quarter, that was a good game. That being said, myself and coaching staff need to do a better job of creating extended pressure at training. They realized too late that they had what they needed to solve the puzzle.”
