The Detroit Red Wings get set to take on one of the most exciting teams in the NHL on Friday night, as they prepare to host the San Jose Sharks.

The Red Wings return home after a tough road affair against the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night. After a spirited win over the Carolina Hurricanes less than 24 hours before, Detroit’s offense could not buy a goal against Jeremy Swayman, leading to a 3-0 defeat, marking an end to the team’s four-game win streak.

The loss might have knocked the Red Wings out of the top spot in the Atlantic Division, but it does not take away from what has been a strong first half of the season for the Original Six franchise. They still look like one of the best teams in the NHL. With captain Dylan Larkin and Alex DeBrincat leading the charge, Detroit has the makings of a playoff team for the first time in a while.

The Red Wings currently sit second in the Atlantic, one point back of the Tampa Bay Lightning for first.

They take on a Sharks team that is also going through some rejuvenation. Powered by young stars like Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith, San Jose is contending for a playoff spot in a year where few would have expected them to. The team has won six of its past eight games, is sitting fourth in the Pacific Division, hanging onto the second Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.

These two teams met in San Jose back in early November, with the Wings coming away with a shootout victory.
