Last time out: Guard Alex Chaikin scored 22 points, but UCSD lost to 84-79 to Cal State Northridge at LionTree Arena on Thursday. Chaikin was 6-for-11 from 3-point range. Tom Beattie scored 13 points and Leo Beath added 12 points. Freshman Hudson Mayes had a near double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds plus two steals. Emanuel Prospere II had 10 points. The Matadors outscored UCSD 10-3 over the final 2:22 after a free throw by Beath put UCSD up 76-74 with 2 ½ minutes to play. CSUN had a 46-32 advantage in rebounding. UCSD turned the ball over just six times.

Series history: Cal State Bakersfield leads 20-6, but the teams have split their last 10 matchups.

Tritons update: UCSD is 3-4 after starting the season 10-1. Sophomore Chaikin started in place of guard Aidan Burke on Thursday, marking the first time this season that the Tritons have altered their starting lineup. Chaikin has scored 94 points in his last six games; his 48.7% 3-point shooting percentage in Big West Conference play is the second-best mark in the league. Beath is averaging 15.5 points a game but is just 15-for-58 (26%) over the last five games.

Roadrunners update: Bakersfield has lost two straight games. Guards Dailin Smith (14.9 ppg) and CJ Hardy (13.7 ppg) lead the Roadrunners in scoring. Forward Ronald Jessamy averages 12.2 points and 6.4 rebounds a game.
