Siegel High School was the setting Friday night for the first meetings in the longtime basketball rivalry between Siegel at Oakland at Siegel.

Both teams have met nearly 100 times on the hardwood.

Oakland’s girls continued their dominance of Siegel, winning their 20th straight game 46-40. Siegel battled until the end as Oakland made some mistakes before time ran out.

Siegel’s boys held off the Patriots 77-63.

“I was proud of our kids the way we battled those last five minutes, but we have to avoid the slow starts and turnovers,” Siegel girls’ coach Bryan Weakley said. “It is hard to see but we are getting better every day.”

Oakland jumped out to a 17-5 lead and led wire-to-wire in the victory. Oakland improved to 2-0 in 10-4A with the win but has challenges awaiting in Blackman and Rockvale in the coming week.

“I have been telling them the biggest thing we need to do is finish,” Oakland coach Scott Thomas said. “When we get a 10-plus point lead we need to extend it out and not let the opponent think they have a chance to come back.”

BOX SCORE

BOYS

Siegel 77, Oakland 63

The boys game featured 3-pointers and good free throw shooting by Siegel. It was close for eight minutes, but the Stars pulled away to lead by 11 at intermission, 36-25.

The closest Oakland came was seven in the final period with four and a half minutes left. Siegel extended the lead with free throw shooting and perimeter shooting.

Siegel had four players in double figures, led by Omar Conteh with 24 points. RJ Biggers added 18 and Kale Martin and Damian Goring each scored 16 as Siegel evens its district record at 1-1.

Siegel shot 23 of 27 at the free-throw line.

“We missed eight against Rockvale and nine against Smyrna,” Siegel coach Matt Rigsby said. “We have four guys that can do what they do. (Delvion) Ewing knows his role and has earned more minutes and deserves them. When he hit the three-pointer I think he was shocked by it.”

Oakland dropped its second straight district game on the road.

“I just have to go back to the drawing board and I get it,” Oakland coach Tony Rutland said. “The guys aren’t used to my coaching style. We are still not paying attention to the details, and if you don’t you can lose by 10-15 points like we did today.”

The Siegel boys lead the series with Oakland 29 to 24 while the Oakland girls lead the series against the Stars 29 to 16.
