The Bruins made a trade and a call-up before heading to Chicago on Friday.

Boston sent seldom-used tough-guy Jeffrey Viel to Anaheim for a 2026 fourth-round pick and called up defenseman Billy Sweezey on an emergency basis.

According to the Bruins announcement, it will be the earlier of Anaheim’s two fourth-round selections, originally acquired from Detroit and Philadelphia. The Bruins now have three fourth-round picks in the 2026 draft and nine total selections.

Viel, 28, had played in just 10 games this season without recording a point. He had 30 penalty minutes, including 17 against the Ducks, stemming from a fight with Anaheim captain Radko Goudas, who will now be his teammate.

Sweezey‘s call-up comes after Andrew Peeke left Thursday’s game with a lower-body injury.

Sweezey, 29, is a Hanson native, who has nine games of NHL experience, all with Columbus in 2022-23. He’s spent the last two seasons with the Providence Bruins. He had a goal and 10 assists in 34 games in the AHL this year and 51 points in 303 career AHL games.Â
