I’ve lived in Council District 13 since graduating from UCLA in 1993.

First, I was at Sunset and Gardner, above Toi and Freedom Guitar, when the old Sunset Grill was still a shack. I’d been going to punk rock shows and clubs all around the district since high school. I worked for Larry Flynt in Beverly Hills during the day, and shot skateboarders in the alleyways behind Sunset at night. I got fat eating at all the great food spots, and started several businesses with offices on Sunset in Hollywood and Glendale in Atwater.

Moved to Silver Lake, attended Loyola Law School, had a family, started teaching.

Priorities

Housing, Housing, Housing. Reconnecting CD13 with city services so we get what we paid for. Street accessibility, upkeep, and safety.

Three questions

The Eastsider put the following three questions to all City Council candidates on the Eastside this year:

1) If elected, will you utilize Municipal Ordinance 41.18 to address tent encampments in District 13?

Yes. All conditions. We’ve taken care of the “easy” unhoused cases. It’s only going to get harder from here. It is reasonable to create safe zones for those who are more vulnerable to the unreasonable such as kids attending school, elderly, those who didn’t grow up streetwise, etc. We’re not all as tough as those who criticize the ordinance and that needs to be taken into account.

2) The LAPD currently has 8,665 sworn police officers, down from a peak of approximately 10,000. Mayor Karen Bass said she intends to bring the ranks back up to 9,500 officers. Do you support the mayor’s aim to add officers?

Yes. But the LAPD has a major problem that young people don’t want to take that career path. They have to show that they are in tune with the times, and that is not happening.

So LAPD, police union, and the mayor needs to show us that they have a solution to this problem, or I’m afraid that those hired will not be the kind of candidates we want as officers, as they will not have the mindset to deal with LA’s security future that needs to rebalance the militarization of policing since 9/11.

3)  Every council office has discretionary funds. How will you spend that money in the first year of the next council term?

Cleaning. Re-striping. Simple traffic safety for increased accessibility and visibility. Mapping. Obviously, lighting. Outreach to bridge the gap between residents and city services, which I see as a basic education campaign that would be part of the mapping program.
