BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Locally Dense Tule Fog: in the spotlight!

The fog hasn’t been showing up everywhere, but where it’s been forming – it’s been significant. This past week saw foggy nights and mornings for many South Valley neighborhoods, with several days of school delays.

Unlike the Tule Fog episode of late November and early December, where it was gray day after day and highs under 50, our latest round came in with afternoon temperature rebounds, with highs in the 60s and even low 70s.

This pattern could continue with locally low to almost no visibility where the fog does form, making it precarious to drive at times and in some areas. Fog keeps reforming as all of the ingredients are in place: high amounts of surface-level moisture, clear skies, lowering temperatures and a temperature inversion (which means warmer readings exist higher up).

This pattern is on rinse & repeat mode. If you are going to be hitting those roads: USE EXTRA CAUTION AND GO SLOW! Just because your neighborhood may be sunny doesn’t mean that the same will be seen even a few blocks away. That’s the nature of this latest Tule Fog episode – it’s localized and DENSE!
