Gunfire was exchanged on Tuesday between an off-duty sheriff’s deputy and a person attempting to burglarize a vehicle, the Whittier Police Department told NBC4 Investigates.
The shooting was reported around 9 p.m. in Whittier after a homeowner interrupted an auto burglary in progress, according to police. During the confrontation, the attempted burglar and homeowner exchanged gunfire, prompting the burglar to flee.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said one of its off-duty employees was involved in the confrontation. Psychological services were offered to the employee following the shooting.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
A description of the burglar was not immediately available.
“As with any shooting, once the criminal investigation is adjudicated, the Department’s Executive Force Review Committee will evaluate the shooting to determine if any Department policies were violated,” LASD said in a statement. “The Department takes all acts of violence and threats against our personnel, both on and off-duty, with the utmost concern.”
