Micheal Gates, the one-time city attorney for Huntington Beach who left Surf City for a brief interval in the federal Department of Justice in Washington before returning to City Hall, is on the move again, potentially,

On Wednesday, Gates, 50, made an announcement that was widely anticipated: he’s running for the post of attorney general of California in the June election.

He’s running on a slate with Steve Hilton, who is seeking the Republican nomination for governor.

“California has the highest cost of living and the highest taxes, which are crushing families, and Sacramento elites keep scheming for ways to raise our taxes while leaving our streets unsafe for our families and our businesses,” said Gates at a press conference .

His most likely opponent in June may be the incumbent Attorney General Rob Bonfa. Gates and Bonfa have clashed several times over Huntington Beach’s aggressive efforts to resist state mandates on housing, zoning, voter ID and other issues.

Gates, who was twice elected city attorney for Huntington Beach, left City Hall in February 2025 to serve in the Civil Rights Division of the federal Department of Justice, leaving 10 months later to return to Surf City’s city attorney’s office as chief assistant city attorney.
