SPOKANE, Wash. – Back in action on the road, the San Diego women’s basketball team (7-13, 1-6 WCC) fell to Gonzaga (14-6, 6-1 WCC) by an 87-42 final score on Saturday afternoon at the McCarthey Athletic Center.Â
Kylie Ray led the way for San Diego as she scored 13 points in her team’s lone game of the week.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
After the Bulldogs scored the first points of the game, Ray answered back by knocking down a mid-range jumper to make it a 3-2 game.
A few possessions later, Hallie Rhodes drove to the basket and used her left hand to score a layup to get USD back within four midway through the quarter.Â
Scoring her team’s final points of the quarter, Olivia Owens made a great move and found some open space as she hit a jumper as the Toreros trailed 25-11 at the end of the first quarter.Â
The first three minutes of the second quarter were scoreless as both defenses forced multiple turnovers and weren’t allowing many easy looks at the basket.
USD broke through with the first points of the quarter as H. Rhodes scored a driving layup after Owens collected an offensive rebound to make it a 25-13 score.Â
Later in the quarter, Ray would knockdown a three on the wing as the Toreros had work to do trailing 41-18 at the half.Â
Ray got a good look to start the second half as she scored on a turnaround jump shot in the paint.Â
Working to get back into the game, H. Rhodes got into the paint and put home a jumper to make it a 49-23 score midway through the quarter.Â
Helen Holley would get in on the action as she secured an offensive rebound and scored a put back as the Toreros trailed 63-27 at the end of the third quarter.Â
To start the fourth quarter, Jayden Rhodes got USD on the board as she made a pull up jumper from just outside of the paint.
Playing in her home state, Jessica Ajayi made a three point jumper off a great feed from Malia Tharpe as Ajayi played many key minutes in the second half of the game.Â
Gonzaga would go on to pick up the 87-42 victory on their home court.
TORERO TIDBITS
Ray led the way for USD as she scored 13 points, grabbed two rebounds, forced a steal and blocked a shot against the Bulldogs on Saturday.Â
H. Rhodes scored 10 points on 4-for-9 shooting from the field as she also collected a pair of rebounds to end another week of conference action.Â
