BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – UC San Diego junior Leo Beath posted a 20-point, nine-rebound performance as the Tritons rolled to an 83-62 win over Cal State Bakersfield Saturday afternoon inside the Icardo Center. Beath was one of three in double figures for the Tritons, who improved to 14-5 overall, 4-3 Big West. Alex Chaikin added 14 and Bol Dengdit poured in 12 in the win. Tom Beattie contributed eight points, seven rebounds, four assists and a personal best four steals.

The Tritons used a suffocating defense to limit the Roadrunners to just 32% shooting – the lowest by a UC San Diego opponent this season. The Tritons matched a season best with 13 steals.

Cal State Bakersfield fell to 8-12 overall (2-6 Big West) with the home setback.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Making his second straight start, Chaikin came out firing from distance. He hit his first three from deep – the Tritons knocked down five-of-seven from beyond the arc – and UC San Diego built a 26-15 lead with 7:02 to play in the first half. On the other end of the floor, the Triton defense limited Bakersfield to just 4-of-20 shooting (20%).

Chaikin hit four from distance to lead all scorers with 12, and the Tritons led 38-30 at the half. UC San Diego’s defense allowed the ‘Runners to connect on just 27% of their first half shot tries. Tom Beattie paced the Tritons with seven first half rebounds, with Leo Beath scoring eight and grabbing five boards.

UC San Diego began the second half on a 12-0 run thanks to seven quick points from Beath and a three-ball from Bol Dengdit. From there, the Tritons continued to pull away.

UC San Diego outscored the ‘Runners 45-32 in the second half. Trap Johnson scored a career-high nine in the win – including seven after halftime.
