Laurence (Larry) Manzer
OBITUARY
Laurence (Larry) Richard Manzer, 91, passed away on December 26, 2025 surrounded by family at home in El Cajon, CA.
He was born in San Diego, CA to parents Josephine and Lawrence Manzer. His Catholic education included Saint Joseph’s Grammar School and Saint Augustine High School before completing his studies at San Diego State University.
Larry was drafted into the Army in 1957 and relocated to San Francisco where he married his high school sweetheart Monica, eventually moving back to San Diego. Building on his business skills, he would start Pacific Drapery which remains in the family.
Larry’s father fostered his lifelong passion for sailing at a young age. He raced sailboats the world over, and died as the second most senior member of San Diego Yacht Club. His zeal carried over to the family, and was most proud being named the 1979 National Boating Family of the Year. All children are now boat owners and yacht club members.
Flying was a dream that became a reality in 1983, taking Larry and Monica on grand adventures across North America. Cars were another passion, and at one point had six Mustangs in the family, most of which were run-down and he restored. Over the years, dogs were also constant companions.
Following the passing of Monica in 1996, Larry married Sandra Smelik in 1998 which brought together two proud Catholic families. Bonded by faith, family, and fun, they traveled extensively and enjoyed hosting large gatherings.
Larry is survived by wife Sandra Smelik Manzer; son Joseph and daughters Maureen Latham (William), Colleen Manzer (Matthew Wilson), Lisa Leweck (Craig), Kathleen McKaveney (John), and Julie Redler (Ken), along with ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He embraced the Smelik family wholeheartedly and is additionally survived by Matthew (Teri), Shawn Trenfel, and Jennifer Doheny (Sean) plus seven grandchildren.
